Two Saints
I chose two saint names for my confirmation into the Catholic Church. This was not only because I was unable to choose between them, but because I know that I desperately need both of them, and their guidance and encouragement, everyday.
One is Saint Catherine of Siena. She is for unbounded determination and courage, and her belief in the power of writing letters of tremendous mastery. She wrote extensively on the topic of true freedom, and the fearlessness we may all know when we walk with Christ.
The other is Saint Therese of Lisieux. She is for intrepid daring in an additional sense: the bravery of her ‘little way’, which is to do small things with great love; and in whatever circumstances to obey the demands of that love. I write about each of them in my Journal. St. Therese, in her too short life, has inspired millions with her words and guidance.
The Church teaches that we are all called to be saints. It seems thoroughly impossible to me; that is, for me to strive for such a thing. How? Me? But we are nevertheless called to do so, and we are called by the loving God who made us in his image, who knows us better than we will ever know ourselves. He knows the butterfly enclosed in the cocoon because he created her.
