Numbers 6:24
Throughout the Bible there is a recurring theme: the mystery of light.
In the Transfiguration, Jesus becomes radiant, he shines, and is nearly blinding to the apostles who are with him. In many Cathedrals, light flows through enormous windows and falls into pools of luminous color on the dark, stone floors. The concept of light is connected with clarity, with truth. Light illuminates.
Light through water droplets creates a rainbow. The light of the stars, and the moon, makes dark passages over mountains or across seas possible. Light is life.
Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it; nor does it comprehend it. [John 1:5]
In Numbers 6:24 the prayer, the hope, is that God will shine his face upon us, that he will ‘lift up his countenance’ and bring us peace. It is said that in Heaven we will see God face to face. No one can really imagine what that might be like, or even what it is to ‘see God’. In this world we remain veiled, shrouded in shadow. Yet we are invited into the eternal light of Christ even so, in this life, as we are.
His light bends to us, and gathers us to him.
