The Blessings of Littleness

In one of her letters [No. 197], St. Therese of Lisieux writes: “Let’s love our littleness … then we will be poor in spirit and Jesus will come and look for us. However far away we are, he will transform us into flames of love.”

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Like so much of what Jesus teaches this seems the antithesis, the upside-down, inverse of what the world teaches, what our culture tells us everyday. I am learning that it has to do with humility. Not humiliation or inferiority, but the emptying, and the letting go of what we grasp and cling to so tightly, inwardly; which then allows for grace and mercy to enter, to illuminate us from within. And to inflame us with a light that is not our own.
