Awaken
This postcard conveys a very simple prayer, echoed in many Psalms and prayers throughout the centuries: Lord, may our hearts be awakened. It says in Hebrews 11:1 that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Faith involves a strange blindness: the heart somehow sees what the eyes cannot; and to the rational mind this seeing can often seem endlessly vague and perplexing. I know that it is supremely unlikely that I will ever receive a miraculous vision, with my physical eyes.
Therefore, faith is an wondrous gift and only the heart can truly obtain its fullness, can feel it working in the depths of the soul, stirring even the mind with fresh thoughts and hopes. So we pray that Christ awakens our hearts first, so that we might begin the journey with him. Jesus said to doubting Thomas: “Blessed are they that have not seen, yet have believed.” [John 20:29] This is the joy of faith, the miracle of seeing in the dark.
